Manganese flakes price goes up in China

    Tuesday, June 9, 2009, 07:01 PM [Manganese Flake,Manganese Meta]

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 9 Jun 09 - Manganese price goes up again early the week with the buyers back to the market to replenish stocks. Sources reported that demand from the downstream industry remains firm while the market supply continues to be tight in the spot market. Some offers reach RMB13,000/t ex works again and suppliers are unwilling to sell in a hurry not, trying to make some high prices.

A Hunan-based smelter with no stock at hand told Asian Metal that the offer in the area is about RMB12,800-13,000/t (USD1,871-1,901/t) ex works. "Demand is still firm in domestic market but the supply is tight," said the source, thinking that though many smelters have resumed but only in partial operation. The source believed the tight supply in spot market would hold manganese market from retreating too fast in the coming weeks even though the price failed to move up further.

Some participants claim that up to 80% of the smelters have already resumed production, which would definitely depress the market still in relatively low demand. A Guangxi-based smelter, unwilling to sell at below RMB12,700/t (USD1,857/t) ex works, regarded the overcapacity of manganese industry the most reason for the low price of manganese metal, which stayed most of the time around its production cost level.

The source also confirmed the export market failed to see any improvement yet. "We had an inquiry whose intention price was only around USD2,300/t CIF Rotterdam, which we could not make any profits," said the source, deciding to focus on domestic market this year where the demand is stronger and profits are higher.

With the South China enters rainy season, the transport condition is very bad in some areas and this would also hamper the supply of manganese ore, which is another reason to the increasing price for the moment. Manganese production would slide in short of raw materials, pushing the smelters to expect for higher prices and become reluctant to sell hastily.

Manganese flakes offers increase pushed by more inquiries

    Monday, May 11, 2009, 08:15 AM [Manganese Flake,Manganese Meta]

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 6 May 09 - Manganese offers increase by RMB100-200/t (USD15-29/t) as more inquiries are received. Sources reported that manganese supply in spot market is a bit tight and suppliers start to raise their offers.
A Hunan-based smelter offering RMB12,500/t (USD1,833/t) ex works told Asian Metal that they could sell the material at RMB12,400/t (USD1,818/t) ex works. "As the downstream market warms a bit and buyers start to inquire for the material, the situation is better in China now," said the source who has no stocks at hand for the moment.
The source claimed that as the production is very low in China, it is a bit difficult to replenish too much material in the spot market. "It will be normal for the price to increase by RMB50-150/t (USD8-22/t) if you need some materials for prompt delivery."
AHowever, the source thinks it can be impossible for manganese price to increase too much while the downstream industry remains a bit stagnant and no one is quite confident about the market in the coming months, especially when export market hardly improves.
A branch of a Japanese based buyer located in North China told Asian Metal that they have stayed away from the market for over two months due to the weak demand in Japan. "There were only some very small inquiries of about 20-50 tons in the last few months. And the concluded price is also a bit low," said the source, who doubts whether the price could go up this time while right before the May Day, manganese price slid soon after it rose above RMB13,000/t (USD1,906/t) ex works.
While the supply is also not very sufficient, the source claimed that it is also difficult for the price to slide too much in the coming weeks. "We think the price would go stable at about RMB12,500/t (USD1,833/t) ex works this month."

Manganese market quiet with production declining

    Thursday, April 2, 2009, 08:04 PM [Manganese Flake,Manganese Meta]

Manganese price remains at around RMB12,000/t (USD1,754/t) ex works but few deals are concluded. With more smelters about to halt production, the price stops from sliding again. Sources are expecting the market demand to rebound late this month.

A Hunan-based trader who received some unsolicited offers of about RMB12,300/t (USD1,798/t) ex works told Asian Metal that demand has been low for months, "thus some participants are wondering whether the market would go active late this month." The source has no intention of placing any orders yet, thinking it risky to keep stocks though the current price is claimed to be around the bottom line.

The source believed that the production cost of manganese metal would also slide in the coming weeks while the price of imported manganese ore has slid much. "This would also push down the price for domestic manganese carbonate ore," the source demanded.

The source claimed that the downstream stainless steel mills has been stagnant for months and the stainless steel output is reported to decrease in the near term, which might worsen the manganese market.

Another Hunan-based smelter who has been out of production told Asian Metal that it is too difficult for the manganese smelters to operate with hardly any profits to make. "Some people claim the suppliers can get some allowance of about RMB100-200/t for the low price of around RMB12,000/t (USD1,754/t) ex works, which could help nothing to reverse the bad situation," the source claimed, still reluctant to enter the market while no inquiry was received recently.

The source keeps watching the market, waiting for the demand to rebound and expecting a higher price.

    Manganese market summary Mar 16-20

    Thursday, April 2, 2009, 08:03 PM [Manganese Flake,Manganese Meta]

(2009-3-28)BEIJING (Asian Metal) 23 Mar 09 - Manganese market has been stable in the week while the participants keep watching. Some smelters are reported to have resumed production on the expectation that the market would be warmer in the second quarter but still thin deals are concluded.
    Asianmetal(English) www.asianmetal.com BN1A
Manganese price has been lingering at about RMB12,200-12,400/t (USD1,786-1,816/t) ex works though the offers have moved up to about RMB12,500-12,700/t (USD1,830-1,859/t) ex works. More inquiries are received but only some very small deals are reportedly concluded in the week.
    Asianmetal(English) www.asianmetal.com JF3P
Manganese production cost keeps high though the price of manganese ore slides a bit. As the preference on the power price was cancelled recently, some smelters start to claim that the production cost rises a bit. Some try to raise their offers as a result.
    Asianmetal(English) www.asianmetal.com 267L
Manganese export market sees no improvement. The offer keeps at about USD2,300/t FOB. Some suppliers are reluctant to sell for the moment, thinking few profits can be gained. Demand of the material from Europe remains low while the workable price slides to about USD2,250/t FOB for the buyers from Japan or South Korea.
    Asianmetal(English) www.asianmetal.com FAD2
As the first quarter is about to end, some participants expect the demand to increase slightly in the second quarter. Some claim the consumers have been out of the market for long and just keep very little material at hand. So they might have to arrange some deals for the second quarter. Some smelters resume production as a result though still thin deals are concluded.
